The post holder will:
• Provide unscheduled dental care for patients in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly unable to access a General Dental Practitioner, and for visitors to the county requiring emergency care
• Support with routine dental care of children and adults unable to access a General Dental Practitioner
• Participate in appropriate community dental and oral health promotion activities
• Be actively involved in our client’s Dental CIC teams
• Be responsible for safe working and practice on a day-to-day basis in sites of clinical activity
• Be responsible for ensuring compliance with appropriate health, safety and security procedures within the work area, and report accidents, incidents and near misses using the our client’s incident reporting procedure
• Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Clinical Director and Management Team

Key accountabilities:
• Treating target numbers of patients
• Working in a number of clinics within East, Mid and/or West Cornwall
• Maintaining and developing your clinical competency and continuing professional/personal development according to agreed training needs via our client’s Training Academy
• Consider becoming a shareholder and having a voice in our client’s business to help drive forward
• Accommodating on-going organisational change demonstrating flexibility and adaptability

This post requires Occupational Health clearances, DBS clearance and two satisfactory references prior to start date, with all interview and appointment expenses covered including travel and DBS check

Knowledge Skills, Training and Experience:
• Bachelor of Dental Surgery
• Full registration with the General Dental Council and Professional Indemnity Insurance (note, we pay for our clinical colleagues’ indemnity and GDC registration)
• A current NHS Performer Number
• Competent in the common aspects of clinical dentistry and experience of a wide range of dental procedures acquired through training and clinical experience
• Demonstrable understanding of all aspects of pain and anxiety management, particularly for anxious patients
• Evidence of/commitment to continuing professional/personal development
• A current full driving licence
• Occupational Health clearance
• Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner, and be competent and confident in dealing with patients who need unscheduled and/or emergency dental care
• Ability and knowledge to assess patients’ needs and make the appropriate treatment planning decisions
• Good interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal and non-verbal) and the ability to balance compassion, diplomacy and assertiveness
• Ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure, multi task and prioritise
• Ability to work as part of a team, including with professional support colleagues
• Trained to recognise and respond to medical emergencies (ie. Immediate Life Support Techniques)
• Ability to handle patient monies and oversee banking arrangements
• Knowledge of the Data Protection Act/General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and NHS Confidentiality Guidelines (eg. Caldicott) and their implications
• Awareness of and ability to keep patient confidentiality
• Good time management skills and able to work within time frames
• Good IT skills
• Knowledge and acceptance of NHS / local policies and guidelines

Working conditions:
• It is expected that post holders will be familiar with NHS dental services regulations
• It is expected that post holders will be willing to receive appropriate on-going training and professional/personal development
• The work is primarily clinic based and will include use of computer and telephony equipment
• The work may include occasional light lifting duties such as stationery boxes, files, dental consumables or other deliveries
• Patients and/or their carers and companions may on occasions be aggressive and abusive and this places emotional demands of which the post holder should be aware
• There will be occasions when travel to work in other locations will be required, with paid business mileage

The environment:
• Cornwall has a largely rural population of over 530,000 – about a half of these people are unable to access a General Dental Practitioner
• There are about 200 General Dental Practitioners in the county
• There are two Consultant Oral Surgeons and one Consultant Orthodontist at Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro – oral surgery and orthodontics are also provided at Plymouth and Barnstaple
• Smile Together operates as an employee-owned community interest company from 13 Dental Clinics in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly employing around 30 full and part-time dentists
